Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads, no usage limit. There is no server bill to fund, which is exactly why this is possible.
How good is the translation?
It uses Apple's on-device translation models — the same engine behind the system Translate app. For everyday travel and conversation it's strong. It is not a substitute for a professional translator on legal or medical text.
Which languages?
Twenty-three at launch, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Ukrainian.
What is the optional model download?
Translation itself needs nothing extra. The rewrite and explain features use a language model: on newer iPhones that's the one already built into iOS, and on older ones you can download a model once, about 2.3 GB, which then runs on your phone's GPU. You can skip it, and remove it later.
Does it need iOS 18?
Yes. The on-device translation framework it's built on arrived in iOS 18.
Is there an Android version?
Not currently. The app is built directly on Apple's on-device frameworks, which don't have a direct equivalent.
